Energy storage for railways

By using energy storage solutions we separate principally two fields of applications. The so called “on board” installations, i.e. energy storage in locomotives, trains, wagons and tramways … These products used in this applications are introduced on this page. The second application is stationary installation, for example signaling and switching stations. HBL offers a broad range of rolling stock batteries in Ni-Cd and lead acid technology from own production.

Ni-Cd batteries are produced by HBL in 3 different positive and 4 negative plate technologies and are built into 4 different product lines optimized for railway on board applications.

Ni-Cd Batteries 1. Generation – Pocket plate technology

Pocket plate Ni-Cd batteries are more and more replaced by newer technologies
in rolling stock applications. They are continuously replaced by newer technologies
due to the following features:

  • Limited cycle life
  • Limited high power capability
  • Shorter life time – higher capacity loss
  • High maintenance costs
  • Limited chargeability
  • Big space – high weight

HBL still carries a broad range of special pocket plate rail batteries for the replacement
market and the capability to design products as per customers specifications.

The positive sinter plate belongs to the 2. Generation of Ni-Cd plate technologies and has proved highest reliability during the last 80 years of it use in this application, even under extremest conditions. By combining the positive sinter plate with the negative pasted electrode (PNE) the water consumption and weight could be dramatically reduced. It provides the following features:

  • Good cycle life
  • In use in various applications fields related to rolling stock
  • Very good lifetime in rolling stock applications – up to 15 years
  • Extremly low water consumption – very low maintenance costs
